What is VELUX?

For over half a century, VELUX has been and continues to be a leading manufacturer of roof windows, flat roof windows, sun tunnels and roof window blinds.

VELUX delivers better living and working environments for people around the world and Guardian Roofs UK is proud to be one of their key partners, able to offer a wide range of VELUX products and solutions.

What are VELUX roof windows?

VELUX roof windows are premium-quality windows that can be built into your roof, offering many benefits to any room or extension in your home or business, allowing in more light and fresh air. Being roof-windows, they are fitted in-line with the roof pitch they’re being fitted to.

What’s the difference between a roof window, a rooflight and a skylight?

“Skylight” is bit of a catch-all term to refer to a glazed area of a roof. It’s a word that has perhaps been over-used and thus means different things to different people. As such it can encompass “roof windows” and “rooflights”.

Usually, “roof windows” are of a “standard” size and are fitted in-line with the roof pitch they’re being fitted to (and usually on a pitched roof). “Rooflight” can often refer to a glazed unit on a flat roof, and the category expands beyond being a “window” in the more conventional sense. If installed on a pitched roof, they will often sit outside the pitch line. They can also either be fixed, or open to provide ventilation or access.

The overall aim, regardless of the terminology used, is to let more light into the given space, and often fresh air as well. In our case, we specialise in VELUX roof windows.

Where do VELUX windows work well?

You can have a VELUX roof window or roof light fitted in any room or space that has an external flat or sloping roof.

They are perfect in extensions, solid tiled conservatory roofs, roof extensions, hallways, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, lounges, living rooms, dining rooms and snugs.

The list is endless and the benefits of VELUX windows are many!

What are the benefits of VELUX roof windows and skylights?

More natural light, greater UV protection

Did you know that compared to vertical windows of the same size, VELUX roof windows and skylights can enable you to get twice the amount of natural light into your home. Not only that, making the most of just fresh air and daylight, VELUX roof windows can help the room you use them in to feel spacier and more comfortable – something VELUX has pioneered across the world for more than 70 years now.

Exposure to more natural light in the daytime can help to ward off maladies like seasonal depression and even improve our sleep at night, which, in turn, can make us feel healthier and more energised. Nonetheless, too much UVA light is not good for our skin and so modern VELUX roof windows offer more ultraviolet screening benefits than they did before.

Improved insulation and thermal efficiency

Even if your old roof window is in good or reasonable condition it will not be as thermally efficient as it could be with a new roof window or skylight. You might even be surprised by how much warm air can escape through older windows.

VELUX roof windows are double-glazed. When they are closed, roof windows help to keep both outside noise out and inside noise in, as well as rooms warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Indeed, thermal comfort is vital at home or at work and having a thermally efficient VELUX window or skylight could lead to greater comfort and reduced energy bills throughout the year.

VELUX windows can be easy to clean with just water

VELUX skylights and roof windows have a chemical coating that reacts with UV light to break down dirt, making them easy to maintain and clean with just water. Moreover, VELUX roof windows completely rotate, allowing you to clean the outside glass from inside.

Can you open VELUX windows in the rain?

You can have a Velux roof window part-open when it is raining to allow fresh air in. You can also have the window closed and the vents open to enable air from outside to circulate inside, helping to make your room feel fresh and airy.

What is the standard size of a VELUX window?

VELUX windows are available in a range of styles and sizes to suit your business’ or home’s needs. We can guide you through your design and maybe inspire the approach you take to really open up the feeling of light in your conservatory or extension.

Who can install VELUX windows?

Due to the size and dimensions of VELUX roof windows, you will need a specialist with knowledge and expertise to install it for you. Our expert team can install roof windows quickly and efficiently and we won’t charge you extra for fitting your new roof window or skylight.

Do you need planning permission for a VELUX window?

If planning permission for an extension has already been agreed, or if you are fitting a new conservatory roof and want to install a VELUX roof windows, then you do not normally need planning permission. Roof windows will need planning permission, however, if they protrude more than 150 millimetres above the existing roof plane. Naturally, we will be more than happy to discuss this with you in more detail.

Will a VELUX roof window add value to a property?

Adding an extension, renovating a property or replacing a conservatory roof will often add value and, in our experience, VELUX roof windows are worth the investment as they are a big selling point to potential buyers for all of the reasons we have listed above.

Can you fit blinds to VELUX roof windows?

Yes, you can easily fit blinds to VELUX roof windows. Indeed, VELUX roof window blinds will easily clip into the window frame and perfectly fit your roof window, meaning there is no need for drilling or any major DIY.
